On Friday, February 2, 2024, a public consultation was held for the Urban Accessibility Plan (UAP), which is being developed by the study team of Lever Development Consultants S.A., a member of the Samaras & Associates Group. The consultation took place at the Rethymno City Hall, in the presence of the Mayor, Municipal Council members, municipal staff, representatives of local organizations, and citizens.<\/span><\/p>

The presentation was delivered, among others, by Ms. Stefania Markada from the Transport Planning & Sustainable Mobility Department of Lever Development Consultants S.A., and included proposals for 54 kilometers of linear network across 19 settlements of the municipality.<\/span><\/p>

Specifically, the proposals include:<\/span><\/p>

  • The extension and construction of sidewalks totaling 20 kilometers, along with the identification of points requiring intervention, such as:<\/span>
    • The creation of 668 new ramps<\/li>
    • Ensuring a minimum clear walking width of 1.5 meters<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>
      • Street renovations over 17 kilometers of low-traffic roads with shared-level surfaces and the construction of 405 new pedestrian crossings<\/span><\/li>
      • Provision of guidance paths for visually impaired individuals over a total length of 25 kilometers<\/span><\/li><\/ul>

        \u00a0<\/p>

        Additionally, the plan includes proposals to improve the functional connectivity and accessibility of approximately 120 public buildings, and more than 20 outdoor public spaces and squares.<\/span><\/p>

        Essentially, the strategic design for creating a sustainable built environment was presented to the Municipality of Rethymno. It is an integrated accessibility plan grounded in scientifically supported proposals, aiming to ensure an inclusive and barrier-free urban space\u2014one that protects the environment and ensures safety for both residents and visitors, with a strong emphasis on respect for vulnerable\u00a0<\/span>social groups.<\/span><\/p>
