It is a medium-sized lake, covering an area of 12.6 sq. km, with an average depth of 3.5 m, which is fed by a canal from Lake Heimaditida and in turn occasionally feeds Lake Vegoritida through an underground tunnel closed by a gate. Its ecological importance is reflected in the fact that the lake is both a Special Protection Area (SPA GR GR1340007) and a Site of Community Importance (SCI GR GR1340004).

In collaboration with the Decentralized Administration of Epirus – Western Macedonia (ADIDM), the company “Lever – Development Consultants S.A.”, a member of the “Samaras & Associates” group, is implementing actions of the LIFE Integrated Projects Nature (LIFE IP4 NATURA) project entitled “Integrated actions for the conservation and management of Natura 2000 sites of species, habitats and ecosystems in Greece”, under the coordination of the Ministry of Environment and Energy.

LIFE-IP 4 NATURA is the first Life Integrated Project (LIFE IP) approved for Greece and, at the same time, the longest and most funded nature program the country has ever received. The LIFE-IP 4 NATURA project aims to strengthen the overall protection of the natural environment in Greece and the country’s compliance with European nature legislation. Twelve partners (Region of Attica, Region of Eastern Macedonia – Thrace, Decentralized Administration of Epirus – Western Macedonia, Green Fund, OFYPEKA, Democritus University of Thrace, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Patras, Ornithological Society and WWF Hellas) join forces for Greek nature, design new protection and management tools, highlighting the opportunities offered by the harmonious coexistence of man with his natural environment.

Lever, since April 2025, has undertaken to assist ADIDM in the pilot implementation of the management plan (Action C.2) and in the monitoring of the environmental impacts of its implementation (Action D.2). Following a relevant participatory process organized by the ADIDM, it was decided to carry out specific projects for the protection of Lake Petron in the Municipality of Amyntaio, P.E. Florina, which include the construction of two observatories for birdlife as well as the repair of the gate that exists in the tunnel that connects Lake Petron with Lake Vegoritida.

Furthermore, within the framework of action D.2 “Monitoring of the environmental impacts from the implementation of Management Plans in Natura 2000 areas”, a group of special scientists has been established to draw up and prepare a monitoring plan for the protected objects of the area (birdlife, chiroptera, vegetation, flora, fishlife). For this purpose, visits were made to the area, where the population of bats was counted in the tunnel between the lakes, while waterfowl counts were also carried out in the Lake and on-site inspections were carried out together with officials from the ADIDM and the Management Unit of the Prespa National Park and Protected Areas of Western Macedonia, in order to locate the observatories.

The above actions will continue in 2027, while the monitoring action will end with the end of the project in 2028.

Lake Petron is one of the 5 lakes of the Regional Unit of Florina, and is located at the foot of Mount Voras, just 2 kilometers north of the town of Amyntaio.
