We propose interventions to promote walking and cycling in urban areas, through the evaluation of existing available infrastructure and the establishment of critical design parameters to ensure the required accessibility and safety conditions for all.
THE ISSUE
- Traditional traffic planning with an emphasis on vehicle flow
- Predominance of the car as the “main” means of transportation
- Degradation of public transport and gentle forms of transportation, such as walking and cycling.
- Need for adaptation of cities and transportation systems to the gradual de-reliance on fossil fuels
- Ensuring economic, accessible and environmentally friendly transportation for all.
- Highlighting walking and cycling as main components of sustainable mobility
SOLUTIONS
- Development of a methodology for locating pedestrian guidance systems in urban areas using information signs
- Strategic plans for densifying the bicycle path network (Application in the case of the City of Athens)
- Investigation of population characteristics to develop incentives for the promotion of cycling
- Development of a methodology for the preparation of Urban Accessibility Plans
- Experience in issues of pedestrian and bicycle microsimulation in appropriate software (Aimsun)
- Assessment of the level of service of pedestrian routes using walkability audits in the field
RESULT
- Highlighting the vital importance of walking and cycling in the sustainable development of cities
- Comfort and safety in transportation
- Equal opportunities for social participation for all
