Steps for Moldova’s strategic transition towards Natura 2000 and alignment with the European biodiversity protection framework.
The publication of the Life Renata project in the Winter 2025 issue of EU Research is a particularly important academic and institutional recognition. It presents the development of a comprehensive “Roadmap” to support Moldova’s transition towards Natura 2000. The Life Renata project aims to systematically support Moldova in the transition of the Emerald Network sites towards the standards and requirements of the European Union’s Natura 2000 network.
The main focus of the project is the scientific mapping of the current state of biodiversity, the harmonization of data on habitats and protected species, as well as the strengthening of management and monitoring mechanisms for protected areas. In this context, the project forms the geospatial database and knowledge repository for the network areas, providing updated tools of critical importance for making informed policy and environmental planning decisions.
The company “Lever – Development Consultants S.A.”, a member of the “Samaras & Partners” group, has undertaken the management, communication and dissemination of the results of this important project, lasting 24 months and with a budget of €989,663.89, while supporting the development of frameworks that link environmental protection with European policies.
EU Research is an international scientific journal, which presents innovative projects funded by the European Union and focuses on connecting scientific knowledge with policymaking. The visibility of the project in this issue enhances its international reach, confirms its scientific quality, which supports current European priorities for biodiversity, environmental governance and EU enlargement.
The results of the Life Renata project contribute substantially to improving the management of protected areas in Moldova. The development of a comprehensive and reliable database, combined with the elaboration of a detailed roadmap for the transition to Natura 2000, creates solid foundations for the long-term protection of biodiversity. At the same time, the project deliverables strengthen the administrative capacity of the competent bodies and support compliance with the requirements of European environmental legislation. Through its contribution to the communication of the results, Lever enhances the sustainability and visibility of the project, ensuring that the knowledge and tools developed will have long-term value beyond the duration of its implementation.
